The Bench Lakes are a group of lakes that are located on a few 'benches' above Red Fish Lake and below Mount Heyburn in the Sawtooths. The lakes are up a canyon accessible from the Red Fish Lake Lodge. Though the mantained trail only makes it to the lowest of the lakes, there is an unmarked trail that you can follow via blazes and cairns to reach the upper two lakes.
Our trip consisted fist of a jet boat across Red Fish Lake to the far end and to follow the trail form there. We walked up the trail and slowly made our way to the lower of the top two lakes. There we found ourselves a very nice camp in which we were greeted by deer during dawn and dusk. We stayed at the camp for two nights and spent the second day enjoying the beauty of the area.
During the full day in the lakes we first took a hike up to the top lake and back to check it out. After that I took a solo walk up and around an unnamed summit near Mount Heyburn. From there I got a great view of the Sawtooths and made a nice loop to come back down to the Bench Lakes.
After the extended weekond at the Bench Lakes we completed the loop by walking along the ridge above Red Fish Lake.
