Santa Rosa Peaks

Panorama Santa Rosa Peaks

The Santa Rosa Mountains form a range just south of the Oregon border in Nevada along highway 95. This photo is taken of the back side of the range the day after climbing an unnamed peak in the rain, with the clouds are still obscuring the peaks.

I met some friends to climb Santa Rosa peak. Due some private property our plan was to first climb to the top of the unnamed peak 9153, then follow the ridge over to Santa Rosa Peak. It ended up raining on and off on us all day, and by the time we made it to the top of 9153, we decided that the couple mile ridge walk to Santa Rosa Peak was too much in the weather. Happy with our climb of peak 9153, we found some nice long snow banks to glissade down, and then head back to camp.

One thing I found interesting on this climb was the number of tiny obsidian flakes that were scattered on the mountain side. With no obvious source and due to the size and shape of the chips, they were most likely remnants of someone making arrowheads or other tools from the obsidian.

You can find more photos of the climb in my the Santa Rosa Mountains photo album.
