Roaring Peak
Date: 2020-08-01
Roaring Peak is a 11,458 foot peak that rises up above the fork between the East Fork of the Salmon River and West Pass Creek. This peak is clearly visible from the valley below. I climbed this peak by working my way up the northern fork of Lost Mine Creek into the cirque bellow the summit. From here I followed a crack up the face of the mountain to the southern ridge, then worked my way to the summit.
Sheep Mountain
Date: 2020-07-30
Sheep Mountain is a prominent mountain on a high ridge along the across the East Fork of the Salmon River from the White Clouds. This isolated ridge rises high above the surrounding area and has three ranked peaks along the main ridge. This was a long climb in which I climbed up to one end of the ridge, spent a good part of the day walking along the ridge to Sheep Mountain, the highest point, then dropped down the, looped over one more ranked peak and made my way back to the trail head.
Silver Peak
Date: 2020-07-17
Silver Peak is a 11,112 foot peak in the Boulder Mountains. The peak is climbed by driving up a road that climbs to about 8400 feet to a trail head that goes to to Silver Lake. The climb follows the trail most the way to Silver Lake, then climbs a rib up to the southern ridge, and finally follow the ridge to the summit.
Pioneer Cabin
Date: 2019-08-16
Pioneer Cabin is a mountain cabin built on a ridge overlooking the main crest of the Pioneer Mountains. This cabin was originally built to be a destination cabin in the design of cabins in the European Swiss Alps. Although the cabin never became a destination retreat, it is open to the public. Even though there are some bunk beds in the cabin and a few supplies, it is rarely used as a camping destination and mostly used as a lunch spot for day hikers, such as ourselves. Our hike took the main trail to the cabin, and on the way down I took a slight detour to climb the small unnamed peak 9311.
Pyramid Peak
Date: 2019-08-15
Pyramid Peak is a 11,000+ foot peak located in the Pioneer Mountains. This climb started outside of Copper Basin and hiked up through the Bellas Lakes. This approach of the summit didn't offer that many views of the peak itself, since it was a broad ridge up to the top. But once on the top it provided great views.
Perkins Peak
Date: 2019-08-12
Perkins Peak is a 11,000+ foot peak located in the Boulder Mountains. I climbed this peak from the east side up the North Fork of the Big Lost River. This was my first time up the North Fork, and I followed the road to a rarely used Trail Head. From there, I found an old Trail that worked its way up an unnamed fork of the North Fork which started out heading west then bent to the south. I left the trail and followed a tiny creek up a draw to the saddle to the north of the peak, then followed the ridge to the summit. On my return trip I did some cross country exploring and worked my way over to the nice high meadows where the old trail went, then followed the trail back.
West Mountains Ridge
Date: 2019-08-04
The West Mountains are a mountain range to the West of Cascade Lake. The mountains themselves are a very prominent ridge in the area and offers great views. The ridge itself is covered with wild flowers of all types and makes for a good walk. This trip was a hike down the ridge and back taking our time to visit all the tiny unranked points along the way to check out the different views. The wild flowers are amazing up here.
Duncan Ridge
Date: 2019-08-02
Duncan Ridge is another 11,000+ foot mountain in the Pioneer Mountains. This ridge runs between the main Pioneer Crest down towards Hyndman Creek. The high point of the ridge is where it connects to the main Pioneer Crest. The climb follows the trail up Hyndman Creek. Once you hit the upper basis you make your way cross country and work your way up the draw between Duncan Ridge and Hyndman Peak. From there you work your way up the southern face to the summit.
Invisible Mountain
Date: 2019-07-25
Invisible Mountain is a very visible mountain you see driving up Highway 93 from Arco to Mackay. This mountain sticks out where the Lost River Mountains make a turn as you approach Mackay. Though it has a very broad top, and once on the top you cannot see Mackay or the surrounding area. I climbed to top of Invisible Mountain following its south ridge above Mahogany Gulch. From there I walked across the broad mountain top and also summited the neighboring Sheephead Peak. I then worked my way down the western face of Invisible Mountain and looped back to my parking spot.
Jacqueline and McIntyre Peaks
Date: 2019-07-18
Jacqueline and McIntyre Peaks are two 11,000+ foot peaks in the Pioneer Mountains. These two peaks are named after a local man McIntyre and his wife Jacqueline. The climb started from a road near an old mine. From there I worked my way up to the summit of Jacqueline along her south ridge. Then followed a jagged ridge between the two peaks to the top of McIntyre. I then dropped down the north side of the mountain to a trail in the valley, and followed it back down to the trail head, making a nice loop.
